MTG Rumors! Dominaria United

Update 19-08-2022: release notes for Dominaria have been leaked already. In it are some nice leaks of things that have not yet been revealed in the Wizards Stream. Let’s take a look!

If you are interested in downloading the DMU Release Notes, feel free to grab a copy from Google Drive.

New Mechanic: Powerstone Tokens

Powerstone tokens are a new kind of artifact token. They can be tapped for colorless mana that can be spent on anything except casting a nonartifact spell.

Legendary Artifact
Whenever you cast a multicolored spell, create a tapped Powerstone token. (It’s an artifact with “{T}: Add {C}. This mana can’t be spent to cast a nonartifact spell.”)

{X}{X}{X}, {T}: Look at the top X cards of your library. Put up to two of them into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

• Powerstone tokens are a new kind of predefined token. Each one has the artifact subtype “Powerstone” and the ability “{T}: Add {C}. This mana can’t be spent to cast a nonartifact spell.”
• You can use the {C} added by a Powerstone token on anything that isn’t a nonartifact spell. This includes paying costs to activate abilities of both artifact and nonartifact permanents, paying ward costs, and so on.
• Although all the cards in the Dominaria United set that create Powerstone tokens create a tapped Powerstone token, entering the battlefield tapped isn’t part of the token’s definition. Notably, if you create a token that is a copy of a Powerstone token, the token copy won’t enter the battlefield tapped.

New card cycle: Defilers

The Defilers are a cycle of five Phyrexian creatures, one in each of the five colors. Each Defiler has three abilities: a keyword ability, an ability that allows you to pay 2 life to reduce the cost of a permanent spell you cast of its color, and a triggered ability that rewards you for casting permanent spells of its color.

Creature — Phyrexian Sphinx
4/3
Flying
As an additional cost to cast blue permanent spells, you may pay 2 life. Those spells cost {U} less to cast if you paid life this way. This effect reduces only the amount of blue mana you pay.
Whenever you cast a blue permanent spell, draw a card.

• You may only pay the additional cost once per permanent spell.
• Some players may make the mental shortcut that the Defilers effectively turn one of the colored mana symbols in the spell’s cost into a Phyrexian colored mana symbol. Despite the similarity in function, this ability does not cause the spells to have Phyrexian mana symbols in their costs. Sorry, Rage Extractor!
• The triggered ability will trigger whenever you cast a permanent spell of the appropriate color, no matter what costs you paid to cast it. That ability will trigger and resolve before the spell that caused it to trigger resolves. It will resolve even if the spell that caused it to trigger has been countered.
• If you’re a compleationist, you may choose to pay the additional cost of 2 life even if the spell’s own costs wouldn’t be reduced this way. The Praetors approve.

More

Aside from the new mechanics and cycle there’s also many many cards mentioned in the document that have not yet been spoiled or leaked before, so it’s absolutely worth is to scroll through the full PDF!

Update 26-07-2022: Potentially, a new Sheoldred card leaked!

The text is a bit hard to read on the card, but here’s a transcription:

Sheoldred, Insidious Conqueror

Ward — Discard Two Cards

Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Whenever a nontoken creature an opponent controls dies, or an opponent discards a creature card, put that card from the graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Update 24-07-2022: Man, this weekend has been filled to the brim with spoilers, leaks and previews. For today I will start with a round-up of all the Dominaria United news, and later I will summarize all the Unfinity goodness that has been revealed on SDCC.

Let’s start off with the big reveal! All-time favorite Planeswalker Ajani is going to get compleated in the next set, and then he will kill off everybody’s favorite planeswalking grandmother; Jaya Ballard! Details were leaked thanks to a preview page of the upcoming Magic: The Gathering visual guide on Amazon

For now it looks like WotC is Phyrexianizing the 5 planeswalkers that were released in the Chibi secret lair, but this is ofcourse just speculation.

On the Liliana page we get some spoilers, the main one being about the new Phyrexian invasion, so that’s something to look forward to! The main way they will be doing this is through their new Realmbreaker invasion tree, which they assumingly developed using the sap from Kaldheim’s worldtree.

Update 22-07-2022: Today a lot of new info and preview cards have been released during the weekly MTG stream. Hidden Treasures are back. WotC claims to have recovered sealed boxes of Legends, cards from which will be distributed in Collector Boosters for Dominaria United at a rate of 3%. They will be leaving out about 60 cards from this set as detailed in this article, apparently because they simply did not pull any from the recovered cases.

Also, many Legends cards will be reimagined into new legendary creatures. Previews for Dominaria United will start on August 18th!

There will be 2 precon commander decks, one of which is a 5 color deck called Painbow..

There will be 10 themes for the Dominaria  United Jump/Start set

Despite the cards looking absolutely stunning, I do hope they are now done with the stained glass gimmick and will move on to something new 🙂

Update 20-07-2022: Jumpstart

Turns out that 10 is the number of Jumpstart themes that was announced back in a weekly MTG stream on June 30, but became largely unnoticed. Another thing of note is that Collector Boosters will have two foil Legendary Creatures!

Update 19-07-2022: Rumors and News!

For a while now we have confirmation for this set’s release on September 9 2022, also now finally slowly things are beginning to leak and an official announcement has been announced. There will be a Twitch stream, hopefully showing us some nice spoilers!

It seems like Wizards is pulling all stops in maximizing the revenue for MTG, as there’s also a rumor doing the rounds about the return of Hidden Treasures in Dominaria United. Hidden Treasures were an original idea from Zendikar where Wizards just bought Reserved List cards from the secondary market to randomly seed them in the Zendikar boosters. If they’d be to implement this idea again it is sure to boost sales for this set by a huge margin.

Wizards yesterday announced they will no longer be printing cards in Russian or Traditional Chinese, as well as some other languages. Read more about that in their explainer article!

19-01-2021: Recently three registrations referring to “DominariaUnited” were made, suggesting we will be returning to Dominaria again in the future.

Since all major sets are already announced for 2021, it is reasonable to believe the return to Dominaria will take place in 2022, presumably after the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty
