Garruk the Slayer – Battle The Horde EDH Deck

Today I bumped into a card I did not know existed: Garruk the Slayer. It’s an oversized planeswalker card that was released with M15 is an altenate playmode card for Magic: The Gathering. I love collecting alternate playmode related items for Magic; so far I have a complete set of all Planechase cards, almost a complete set of all Archenemy cards, the 3 Challenge decks from original Theros block including all heroes and hero items, a set of the Explorers of Ixalan tiles, and I am in the process of constructing a Momir Basic offline cube. So, needless to say, when I saw that card I ordered it immediately from cardmarket, and now I am looking to use it to helm a Battle the Horde EDH deck.

Garruk the SlayerAbout Battle The Horde

Battle the Horde is a variant for Magic: The Gathering in which 1 or more players battle an automated deck. Based on the Battle The Horde challenge deck from original Theros block. You construct a deck out of token creatures or other fun cards. It doesn’t really matter what cards you use, though permanents are to be advised here, since the deck will be automatically playing the top X cards of the deck each turn without paying any mana costs or anything.  (I am actually using the card playing rules of the Challenge deck, instead of Horde Magic)

To start 3 turns will be taken before the Horde will start. Determine randomly which player starts, and take turns clockwise. If 3 turns have passed and it’s the Horde’s turn, the Horde will start, if not the Horde will pass. Garruk will start the game in the command zone

During the Horde’s turn the Horde turns over the top 2 cards of their library +1 extra for each other player beyond the first (so, if there are 3 players total, the horde turns over 4 cards), which the Horde plays automatically. If it’s a creature or other permanent put it into play, it has Haste and This Creature attacks each turn if possible. If it’s a sorcery or instant it gets cast automatically. Ignore any effects that would cause the Horde to perform an impossible action.

When decisions need to be made for the Horde, do it randomly (by throwing a dice for example)

The Horde loses the game when they have no more permanents in play and the library is empty. When the commander dies put it back into the command zone. The Horde has no life total; anything that gains life for the Horde does nothing, losing life causes the Horde to mill that amount of cards. When the horde is forced to draw cards they do so, the cards in hand will be played automatically at the start of next turn in addition to the regular cards played.

When the commander is in the command zone, it will be put into play at the start of the Horde’s next turn automatically. This replaces 1 play-from-library card. The commander uses 1 loyalty ability at random each turn.

Additional EDH Rules

Not much really. Just keep in mind that this is EDH free-for-all, so you’re not battling the Horde cooperatively, you are all battling each other! Last man standing wins .

Decklist

I made a decklist on Archidekt. Unfortunately Archidekt does not allow me to add token cards to a deck, so I added a list of needed tokens in a comment. Garruk the Slayer does not have any color pips or anything, but the frame indicates he is black/green, I have kept this in mind constructing his deck. All cards are black/green/colorless.
